PartnersIrvington Elementary School / Arnerich Massena Business PartnershipMISSION: Arnerich Massena & Associates business partnership is established and dedicated to furnish support by providing students in targeted Portland Public Schools (Irvington) with opportunities which will assist them in building positive self images and becoming successful in school through funding and volunteer time of our employees. In 2005-2006, Arnerich Massena / Irvington Elementary School partnership will provide services to an average of 220 students. In 2005-2006, Arnerich Massena employees will dedicate more than 1,200 volunteer hours at Irvington Elementary School. Program Summary: (All Arnerich Massena programs are free) Before-school Reading Club (5 days a week) This program is geared to children in 1st through 4th grades who are not reading at grade level. Emphasis is on sentence fluency, vocabulary building and comprehension. Arnerich Massena currently has 25 trained employees coming to Irvington this year to work one-on-one with children in this program. Currently 24 Irvington students receive this support. Before-school Math Club (5 days a week) This program is geared to children in 3rd through 5th grades. The focus of this program is to provide students who are not at benchmark for math to get extra practice. 10 trained Arnerich Massena employees’ work one-on-one or in small groups to help reinforce basic math and problem solving strategies. Currently 20 Irvington students receive this support. Literacy Support Program (4 days a week) Irvington School staff supervises this program. Arnerich Massena provides funding/staffing of two trained professionals. These two trained employees administer direct literacy services to small groups of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who do not currently meet state’s benchmark for reading and writing. This support is 20 hours per week. Currently 34 Irvington students receive this support. Homework Club (Each Tuesday) This program is geared to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. The focus is to provide students the support they need in order to understand and complete their classroom homework assignments. This program is staffed by 4 Arnerich Massena employees and 3 high school helpers. Currently 30 students receive this support. Girls’ Club (Each Wednesday) This program is geared to 4th and 5th grade girls. The focus is to provide mentoring to girls. Through art, drama, cooking/nutrition, and various community activities we hope to help girls become more empowered and motivated in school. We hope to promote independent thinking young women with higher self-esteem and self-worth. Currently 28 students receive this support. Math & Science Club (Each Thursday) This program is geared to 4th and 5th graders. Through various experiments, activities and field trips centered on math and science, we hope to elevate knowledge, comprehension, and motivation in these areas. Currently 20 students receive this support. Math & Science Summer Camp (2 weeks each summer) Each summer 4th and 5th grade students come together for this fun, all day camp that centers all science and math activities around one theme, such as volcanoes. Arnerich Massena employs 5 teachers to staff this program each summer. Each summer this camp averages 50 students. Summer Journalism Program (5 weeks each summer) This is an intensive course primarily focused on reading comprehension and creative writing. Students receive intensive instruction to help fine-tune important skills in all areas of writing. These areas are expository, persuasive, narrative and imaginative. The end result is a beautiful newspaper, which showcases the children’s work. Each summer this camp averages 15 students.
