Suggested Agenda for this meeting; “Walk to’s…….”

                                                                         Tag Plan

                                                                         State test scores

              I.      Walk to read … strategies discussed. Jay wondered if it would satisfy Tag parents by grouping “like abilities” by having students “walk to” another class where the teacher focuses on that level. Kathy said they have been doing this for years at Sabin with some success. Cynthia said several years ago Irvington had established a committee to look into Walk to read…but that specials and learning center scheduling impeded the process. Jay wondered if some kind of Pilot program with only a couple of classes could be tried. Cynthia said she would be willing to try and bring it up again with different options available for the parents and staff. Also talked about walk to write/math. Re-open the discussion next month.

II.      Tag  Cynthia gave the group a recap of the Grant Tag meeting at the cluster on October 16th . Corrective action plan discussed, under identification was a big factor and all 2nd graders will be screened with a non-verbal test this year. Tag meeting then broke up into school groups. The parents initially were feeling out of the loop but the meeting seemed to appreciate the meeting.

a.       Rachel Ryer our tag coordinator designated some pull out tag groups

                                                             i.      Lisa takes k-2 for chess and literature.

ii.      Grades 3-5 are participating in a Imagination Celebration program.

iii.      6th grade kids are taking advantage of a LEAP program.

iv.      7-8th grade classes are utilizing a Portland Wiz Kid virtual engineering project.

III.      Test scores: the district provided many configurations Lisa asked how to look at them. Ended up looking at trends, most scores increased with the exception of writing which decreased. What specifically brought down writing scores? Has curriculum change affected test scores? Discussed creating concrete expectations. Also looked at the continuing gap between African Americans, whites, and other ethnicities.

Next Agenda: 1) Walk to’s… 2) How to keep more of our 5th graders as they transition to 6th—student transfer deadlines 3) assisting 8th grade transfer to HS
