September 18, 2008Irvington PTA September 18, 2008 6:30-8:00 pm Location: Irvington School Library 1. June 3, 2008 meeting notes were approved. 2. Irma PTA president welcomed everyone to the first PTA meeting of the year. 3. Doug PTA VP went over goals and priorities for the year. The PTA is committed to building stronger communication between Parents, Teachers and Community by utilizing the Google group, web casing, newsletter, alternating the meeting day and offering two meetings this year after directly after school. 4. Maggie Price PTA Member Coordinator, any questions about membership please contact her @, maggieeprice@msn.com. 5. Ed PTA Treasurer distributed the approved budget for 08-09. This year each classroom will receive $1,000.00 to use at the teachers discretion. Supportive class such as Music and PE will receive $400.00 to use as needed. Technology- has spent $20,000.00 of their $25,000.00 budget, updating the technology in the classrooms. $1,000.00 spent towards the completion of the Lizard. All money is accounted for and a complete breakdown of monies spent is attached. 5. Karen Barker/ P.E., requesting funds to start a 6, 7 and 8th grade basketball team for boys and girls. The season will last about 10 weeks and there will be approx 5-6 games. The money will hire a coach and pay for district approved transportation to and from the games. Parents and Teacher can not transport students to and from School related events unless it is your own child. Liability insurance does not cover if an accident were to occur. The season will begin November 3, 2008 thru January 3, 2008. Look out for announcements to follow from Karen. Karen was approved to receive $1,500.00 for the new 6, 7, 8th grade basketball program. 6. Auction Kick off Meeting September 25, at 6:30 pm in the library. If you have any questions please contact Rachel Carlson. Rachael R and Colleen are looking to hand over the torch to someone else this year. Come to the meeting and bring your amazing ideas and your helping hands. Remember the Auction is Irvington’s largest fundraiser, which provides a large source of funding to our school. Last year we raised over $110,000 dollars. Please contact Rachel Carlson at 503.281.5861, rachelabra@msn.com. 7. Rachael R. Gift Wrap fundraiser- packets/order forms go home on Friday, Sept. 20th. Don’t forget you can order on-line. Rachael will be giving prizes away for items sold, look for her on the playground next week. Last year this fundraiser raised $7,000 dollars. 8. Todd Rinier demonstrated the “New Media Cart” that teachers received this year which replaces the overhead projectors of the past. This equipment allows the teachers and students to have access to updated technology in the classroom which allows them to grow with the times and expand on current lessons. 9. Chris Anderson reports that we are still in need of an Extracurricular Activities Coordinator. This person would assist in coordinating activities three times a year. Fall, Winter and Spring. 10. Irma-There are several volunteer positions that are in need of being filled. Please see full list attached. Please help out in any way that you can, Irvington needs you. 11. North Ground Committee/Lizard bench update- Michela reports that the Lizard/Dragon bench is complete, it took a lot longer to complete than anticipated, but it looks great! It has been reported that some one has vandalized a few tiles on the lizard, those tiles will be replaced soon. Michela has been a member of the Irvington community for 30 years and her children attended Irvington. Thank you Michela and to all the volunteers who made the Lizard bench possible. Next faze of the North Ground Committee is to landscape the area around the Lizard bench. Questions, contact Michela 12. Grounds Committee- has been working hard over the summer to keep Irvington’s grounds looking GREAT. But, there work is never done so please join them for the FIRST “Grounds clean up PARTY” October 5, 2008. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Updates from Principal MacCleod- We have several new staff members this year. Please welcome: Vice Principal Lisa McCall, 6th/7th Science teacher Brett Hutwagner, Sylvia Schultz School Psychologist, Ethel Krum Special needs classroom, Greg Wynne K-8 Counselor, Julie Polachek librarian/media specialist. According to PPS Irvington has 476 students enrolled this year. The actual count is 504 bodies but each Kindergarten student is counted as a ½ a person. The good news is the two full Kindergarten classes will receive a teacher assistant in the next couple of weeks. TAG- Talented and Gifted program/cluster meeting is being held at Beverly Cleary on the Fernwood Campus October 21, 2008 6:30-7:30pm. The districts corrective action plan that was accepted by the state will be discussed. This year all 2nd graders will be tested to ensure that no students are overlooked for the TAG program, this testing takes place on October 6, 3008. If you are interested in having your child tested and your teacher has not nominated your child, you as the parent have the option of nominating your child. This year K-5 will receive PE twice a week, K-will receive music once a week, 6ht graders will receive 3day of Spanish, 8th graders will receive Spanish 5days a week. If 8th graders have competed 3year of Spanish and passes the State test they will go into High School with ONE credit in Spanish. 14. Julie Polachek- reports that she has 20years experience working for PPS and is extremely excited about working at Irvington. There is a library committee working to help Julie organize and re-structure the library. If you are interested in help out in the library please contact Cynthia Chase@ Cynthia@homespdx.com. Announcements- PTA clothing closet at Marshell Center is in need of 3-5 volunteers to help out on Monday September 29, 2008 9:30-1:30 and on February 9, 2008. Please contact Maggie@ maggieericprice@msn.com. if you are interested. 16. Family Gym Night is scheduled to start in October. We are looking for three families to host the evening which includes helping set the gym up and clean up afterwards. All PTA meetings will be held the first week of the month, alternating Thursday and Tuesday.
