Irvington PTA

April 1, 2008

6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Location: Irvington School Library

1. As one way to improve communication and increase access to information, this meeting is being web cast.

2. Cynthia will not be able to be here tonight.

3. March PTA meeting minutes will be adopted with the April PTA meeting minutes.

4. Nikki Johnston with the ICA came to speak about the Irvington Cleanup Day.

This year the event will take place on May 10th from 9a.m. until 2 p.m.  There will be a “Free Stuff” area where people can exchange items in good shape including tables and chairs, garden tools, dressers and bicycles.

Acceptable items include furniture, plumbing fixtures, yard debris, scrap metal and scrap lumber.

Unacceptable items include concrete, dirt, electronics, appliances, tires and hazardous waste.  For a complete list of items use Metro’s recycler tool at www.metro-region.org and click on Garbage and Recycling and then on Find a Recycler.

The program needs eleven more volunteers for two-hour shifts which are: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and 1 p.m. to closing. If you are able to assist contact Nikki at 503-287-6937 or ndjz@yahoo.com.

5. It looks like we will not be going through a library renovation so it is time to start figuring out how to best utilize the special appeal money from the 2006 auction.  A library committee will work with the PPS professional librarian, Edith Fuller and Nina from the Albina branch of the Multnomah County Library. Next year there will be a 0.5 Media Support Specialist. If anyone is interested in chairing and/or joining the committee please let us know. Lisa Meilinger and Rachel Carlson have expressed interest.  It would be great to have parents with older students involved as well as teachers and other specialists.

6. Cherie mentioned that a student store might be worth creating.

7. Margaret Morton and Ed Shearer will coordinate the garage sale for next year.

8. Jill Grenda will continue in her role as Arts co-chair.  Julie Cassin has expressed interest in the other co-chair position.

9. Holly Gordon will work on the directory for next year.

10. Is RIF supported by Title 1 and if so how will that effect RIF for next year?

17.  We are looking at the teachers’ funds to see the status of the accounts.

18. Parent Education regarding bullying in the school.

Cherie gave an overview of the curriculum for Irvington School students on bullying.  This literature and curriculum is available for interested parents.  The information is age appropriate and is provided to students in a group setting in their classrooms.  This information is also covered by the classroom teachers and Cherie is the second voice to substantiate the skills. The topics start with empathy building and build up to include recognizing bullying, antiviolence, personal safety and relational aggression as appropriate.

Classroom teachers are often the first to notice the bullying and then Cherie becomes involved.  Bullying is one-sided; if it goes back and forth there is a relationship. Cherie’s intervention can include interviewing the target to see what s/he wants to do, role playing different situations and ways to speak with the aggressor and follow up with parents.  The school follows the PPS discipline rubric and this process is clearly defined on the PPS website.

If you have concerns about bullying, contact Cherie Allbaugh at school or via email at callbaug@pps.k12.or.us

19.  Volunteers are needed to help with the Irvington Home Tour café. Contact Tori Gilbert at tori@thegilbert4.com
