Extracurricular Activities
As promised, the PTA and school staff have worked together to expand our extracurricular activities for the 2007-8 school year. We’re excited about our new offerings and glad to have old favorites back again!
For an overview of the activities being offered winter term, check out the Spring Schedule. The Spring Activities page (on menu to the right) provides more details about each activity and links to their enrollment forms.
In addition to the activities described within, Arnerich Massina (our local business partner) provides even more opportunities for Irvington students to thrive and learn. Arnerich Massina provides the staffing and funding for tutoring groups, a Girl’s Club focusing on service, Homework Club, and Math/Science Club. In addition, Arnerich Massina sponsors Math/Science and Journalism summer camps. Irvington students are indeed fortunate to have such a wonderful partner! Since participation in Arnerich Massina programs is determined by teacher referral, enrollment forms are not provided.
The PTA provides scholarships for any fee-based extracurricular activity offered at Irvington. All students who qualify for free or reduced price lunches also qualify for PTA scholarships. For winter and spring terms, we will be trying out a new approach to scholarships. In the past, PTA scholarships have covered 50% of the tuition and the family was responsible for the other 50%. For 2008 winter and spring terms, scholarship students will only be responsible for $25 per class and the PTA will cover the rest of the tuition. A new Scholarship application form is enclosed with more details about the scholarship program. This spring, we will evaluate whether the new approach resulted in more students taking advantage of scholarships and make recommendations to the PTA for next year’s scholarship program.
Several of our programs depend on volunteers. In particular, Chess and Lego Robotics always need more volunteers We are also seeking volunteers interested in forming a computer club (ranked #1 on last year’s survey!). Interested? Contact Kris Anderson kris.andersonpdx@gmail.com
